The longtime CEO of gambling concern MGM Mirage, Terry Lanni succumbed to cancer after a two year battle. The casino company is now one of the largest gambling companies in the world.
The company was founded by Kirk Kerkorian and as the lieutenant to Mr. Kerkorian; Mr. Lanni oversaw the mergers with Mirage Resorts and the Mandalay Resort Group which were key in its expansion. Now it is known as MGM Resorts International and is a dominant gambling company with nearly a dozen casinos in Las Vegas and a venture in Macau.
He was also responsible for making deals with Stanley Ho to bring MGM into Macau and a partnership with Dubai World which led to an ownership stake in a City Center, a giant Las Vegas gambling complex.
Mr. Lanni was an appealing figure to both Wall Street and Washington because of his humble demeanor amongst the other flamboyant gambling personalities. He was the guiding force behind the growth of the casino industry into corporate backing and political power from its mob infested origins.
